Secretary of War John Armstrong (1757 - 1843)

John Armstrong, the politician who wanted to be a general. Armstrong drew up the plans for the 1813 offensive against the Canadas. Although he was capable of selecting the correct objective, he proved incapable of maintaining the chosen aim.

An armchair general who fancied himself a strategist, Armstrong went north in August of 1813 to coordinate the attack on Montreal.
