The wooden block inserted into the box contained 38 holes for cartridges while a flap opening on the front gave access to a storage compartment for cleaning materials for the musket. British Infantry carried a similar piece of equipment, at the battle of Chippawa both armies removed the blocks and carried 60 rounds that were crammed into the pouch itself.
