Powder Magazine

The clothing worn by workmen inside the powder magazine was designed to prevent accidental explosion of gun powder. Note how nothing they wore could produce sparks.

Barrels were regularly rotated one-quarter of a turn to ensure that the gunpowder was kept loose and well mixed. Barrels marked "LG" contained large-grain powder, while those marked "FG" were filled with fine-grain powder.

Even today, the black powder that is used in military re-enactments is considered to be very dangerous.
